Non Accompanied Minors : the importance of taking the cultural differences into account
The second european capacity building meeting on Non-Accompanied Minors was held in Sicily from June 11 to 15, 2018.
Around 30 social workers, projet managers and researchers from Europe came together to share inspiring experiences on multiculturalism but also to visit centers for non-accompanied minors in Sicily.
Social workers from Apprentis d’Auteuil have shared their practices around multiculturalism such as :
- The importance to establish the first contact in the young person’s mother tongue to help set confidence and show them respect ;
- To have young people prepare meals from their country of origin ;
- To guide the young people in the discovery of their new environment. Like for exemple La Passerelle in Marseille which offers a guided tour of Marseille to all new young person.
Some of these techniques will be developped in the Carnets numériques (online and offline tool offering training for professionals working with street children), such as :
- To introduce the game as a tool to facilitate a multicultural approach
- To focus on food as a major element of integration for non-accompanied minors
The next meeting will be held in January 2019 in Greece. The theme will be the daily support of non-accompanied minors and particularly how social workers can listen to each individual stories and work around them.
