Inclusion of Street Children in Madagascar

Vendredi 29 juin 2018

In Madagascar, the economic situation of the population is getting harder and in some cities, like Tananarive, shelters are supporting more street children than ever. The last census carried out by the Ministry of Population in 2016 counted 2430 children living and working in the street. This situation is all the more worrying as it extends to major cities, particularly Antisirabe.

Since July 1, 2016, Apprentis d’Auteuil is developping a project called ‘Sandratra’ (promoting dignity), in Antananarivo, which objective is to contribute to the professional insertion and social integration of street children and young people.

The project will extend over 2 periods of 36 months each (2016-2019 and 2019-2022) and will enter next July in the last year of its first period. It aims to support street children and their families and to prevent family separation but also to  strengthen the skills and efforts of several local organisations working in the field of childhood protection, particularly of 4 local associations (Centre NRJ, ENDA Madagascar, HARDI and Graines de Bitume).

In total, over 3 years, 1500 children and young people in street or vulnerable situations will be supported by the 4 local partners of AA and children from 300 families will be helped.

In addition, 50 social workers will be targeted for capacity building.
